“Sex In The City” star Sarah Jessica Parker has been booked for the leading role in director Gus Van Sant’s upcoming biopic “Trifecta,” which will tell the story of American Pharoah, the first race horse to win the Triple Crown since 1978.

“Trifecta” will tell the story of American Pharoah’s early years, his struggles in his track debut, and his meteoric rise to superstardom as the twelfth racehorse to ever win the Triple Crown — when a horse wins the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes. Gus Vant Sant will write and direct the film for Sony, and even though he hasn’t finished his first draft of the script, he’s already hard at work with a casting team to fill in the movie’s vital roles.

Sarah Jessica Parker will take on the role of American Pharoah. In an interview with IGN, Van Sant claimed Parker was his first choice for the role. “I can’t see anyone else playing Pharoah,” he explains. “When I look at [Parker], I see a thoroughbred racehorse. She was born to play this role, and I’m excited to watch her bring this character to life. It isn’t very often that as a director you get to work with exactly the actors you want for each role, so it’s all really energizing.”

Van Sant shrugged off concerns about gender, too. “I’m not concerned that Parker is a female, playing a male role. It’s 2015. I think contemporary audiences can handle it, and there’s that whole `Peter Pan’ thing, of course. And yes, she’s technically human, and not a horse, but does that stop Mickey Rourke? Of course not. It works both ways, you know?”

Paul Giamatti will take on the role of Pharoah’s trainer, Bob Baffert, while Steve Buscemi will play Dortmund, American Pharoah’s top rival. Studio executives say Van Sant is hoping to book all of the major roles before finishing the script, in an effort to better tailor his characters to the actors portraying them.

The movie does have its roadblocks, however. Van Sant is currently working with “Weeds” and “Orange is the New Black” creator Jenji Kohan to develop “Salem,” a new HBO drama series about the paranoia and hysteria surrounded Salem, Massachusetts in the late 17th century, when a group of women, who were probably smoking and/ or selling marijuana, were accused of witchcraft and were put on trial. However, Van Sant’s agent claims his “Salem” project will not interfere with his schedule for “Trifecta.”
